Why VoLTE Matters

VoLTE is not optional

The case for understanding VoLTE is straightforward. All UK 3G networks closed in 2024. The UK PSTN closes in January 2027. These two facts make VoLTE the default – and in many cases the only – mechanism for delivering cellular voice in the UK. Engineers, installers, and product specifiers who do not understand VoLTE will encounter device failures, SIM issues, and installation faults they cannot diagnose.

The five drivers

📉

3G is gone

All four UK operators completed their 3G switch-offs in 2024. Devices using CSFB to fall back to 3G for voice calls no longer work. VoLTE is the only mechanism available on LTE-only devices.

🏗️

PSTN is closing

January 2027 is the PSTN closure deadline. An estimated 1.4 million business lines and 14 million residential lines will be withdrawn. Any device on an analogue PSTN line needs a replacement path, and VoLTE is the primary cellular option.

🔊

HD Voice quality

VoLTE with AMR-WB delivers demonstrably better audio quality than legacy 2G/3G voice. For customer-facing applications, contact centres, and safety-critical communications, the quality improvement matters.

Faster call setup

VoLTE calls connect in under 2 seconds. CSFB to 3G took 6-8 seconds. For emergency calls, alarm triggers, and customer service, every second of reduced call setup time has a measurable impact.

📡

Data during voice

VoLTE does not drop the LTE data connection during a call. For IoT devices that need to maintain a data session while handling a voice alarm or notification, this is functionally essential.

🔬

Path to VoNR

VoLTE and VoNR share the same IMS architecture. Understanding VoLTE is the prerequisite for understanding VoNR on 5G Standalone – the next evolution that delivers EVS fullband audio and network-sliced voice.

Where VoLTE knowledge is needed most

Sector VoLTE requirement Key issue
Building management / lifts Critical – BS EN 81-28 compliance PSTN line withdrawn; VoLTE replacement needed
Security and alarms High – ARC-connected diallers 3G diallers stranded; VoLTE SIM required
Telecare and lone worker Critical – life-safety voice calls 2G/3G devices must be replaced
Industrial IoT Medium – voice-capable routers Module and SIM compatibility check required
Enterprise mobile Standard – all UK 4G SIMs Usually transparent; issues arise with imported devices
